Gaming giants in $18 billion merger…

The makers of Guitar Hero, Activision, and the makers of World of Warcraft, Blizzard, are set to become one to increase profits; but may leave the gaming world in shock.

They have both said that they will form “the world’s most profitable games business” in a deal worth $18.8 billion. In terms of the companies, Activision has been recently popular and successful with it’s Guitar Hero franchise, and Blizzard has 9 million people paying to play on it’s successful World of Warcraft.

Blizzard is currently owned by French media group Vivendi, which currently owns 20% in NBC Universal.

“This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector,” said Chief Executive of Vivendi, Jean-Bernard Levy.

They hope that the new company will be popular in all nations, with Blizzard being popular in Asia with it’s StarCraft franchise.

Activision was formed in 1979, and has been through bankruptcy; but with a series of alliances and mergers, it became successful. Blizzard went through a different number of owners, before settling into Vivendi’s hands.
